Mucinous neoplasms of the appendix and ovary: confusing terminology and clinical impact
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mucinous tumors may arise from a variety of anatomic locations; however, their clinical behavior varies considerably depending on their origin. When mucinous tumors involve the abdominal cavity, it may lead to mucinous ascites, clinically known as pseudomyxoma peritonei. While most cases are derived from the appendix, it may arise from a mucinous tumor of the ovary. However, the biological potential of these lesions vary, which is reflected by their recently updated classification schemes. This article is intended to clarify the different classifications of the mucinous tumors derived from the appendix and those derived from the ovary, and to provide therapeutic guidance for clinicians. This may facilitate better communication between pathologists and clinicians, and optimize therapeutic decision making.

Mucinous lesions of the appendix and ovary are commonly encountered in routine practice. There are several published classification schemes for appendiceal mucinous neoplasms with resultant inconsistent use of terms and clinical doubt. While nomenclature is more settled with regards to ovarian mucinous neoplasms, the difficulty here lies with distinguishing primary from secondary mucinous tumou...

متن کاملA giant mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix: a case report and review of the literature
BACKGROUND Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is the second most common etiology of appendiceal mucocele. We report a relatively rare case of a giant appendiceal mucocele caused by mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, which occupied the entire abdomen of an adult woman. CASE PRESENTATION A 63-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of abdominal distention. Imaging studies showed a giant cystic mass ...

We report a case of a 30-year-old woman who had complained of lower abdominal distension. She was noted to have a history of primary mucinous tumor of the left ovary (13.2 × 9.9 × 10.4 cm) that was removed surgically. Two years later she developed the same tumor on her left ovary (8.7 × 6.0 × 6.9 cm) and also had appendiceal mucinous tumor accompanied with acellular PMP. Final pathology reveale...
متن کاملA Rare Case of Primary Mucinous Cystadenoma of Spleen
UNLABELLED Mucinous cystadenomas are relatively uncommon benign cystic tumors. Most of them are found in the ovary, pancreas, and appendix. Primary mucinous cystadenoma of spleen is extremely rare and only countable cases have been recorded. These are assumed to arise from heterotopic pancreatic tissue or invaginated spleenic capsular mesothelium. We present a rare case of primary mucinous cyst...
